At this time of year, you may be buying an RC drone for a family member or friend or you might be even treating yourself to one of these must-have gadgets.

Whoever you’re buying for, if you have never purchased a drone before, there are some questions that you should ask before you part with your hard-earned cash:

1. Is it a drone or quadcopter?

There is some confusion over the difference between a drone and a quadcopter. In fact, most drones come with four rotating blades, which means that they are actually quadcopters.

There are drones that have 6 or 8 blades but the 4-blade model is much more common.

So, in short, an RC quadcopter drone is a drone with four rotating blades but the terms can be used interchangeably.

You will also come across RC planes so make sure to do your research on what kind of model you want in the first place.

2. How much should I spend?

The answer to this question is largely down to the budget you are willing to spend and your experience, to date, with drones.

If you are a novice pilot and buying your first drone, then it may not be wise to spend a large amount of money, as there is a high possibility that your drone will take quite a few knocks.

If you are buying a drone for someone else, take his or her skill and proficiency into account. If they are experienced drone pilots, it would be worth spending a little more on the drone but, again, your budget will come into play.

There are plenty of drones available at every price point so you will have plenty of choice.

3. Should I choose a DIY or an RTF?

A DIY drone is a drone that you assemble yourself – a do-it-yourself option. An RTF drone is a drone that is Ready To Fly – it comes fully assembled and you just need to take it out of its box, charge it and get flying.

If you have an interest in electronics or model assembly, you may derive great enjoyment out of putting your first drone together.

However, if you are more interested in getting out and experiencing the thrill of drone flight, then an RTF is your best bet.
Buying a drone is an exciting time but you don’t want to be blinded by your excitement – asking these questions will set you on the right path to choosing the right drone for whoever will be piloting it.
