Flying quadcopters is something that has become a massive hobby for millions of people all over Australia.
Packed with thrills and spills and allowing users to gain a different perspective of our world, piloting an RC quadcopter drone is one of the best ways to spend your free time.
Given how popular this hobby has become, there have been a number of incidents involving drones and people, which have brought about a need for the introduction of some rules by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).
You should be aware of each and every one of these rules before you buy a RC quadcopter. On that note; here are some of the most important rules with regard to flying your drone in Australia:
1. Keep it in sight
CASA rules state that you must keep your drone in your line of sight at all times. This means that you must be able to see your drone wherever it is flying and you must not let it outside your field of vision at anytime.
For this reason, it follows that you are not permitted to fly your drone during the night or in foggy or cloudy conditions.
2. Flying restrictions
Your quadcopter drone can interfere greatly with other aircrafts such as commercial flights and private helicopters.
For this reason, you cannot fly your quadcopter drone within 5.5km of any airport nor can you fly your drone more than 400 feet or 120 metres into the air.
3. Keep your distance
Drones have the potential to hurt people on impact because they combine speed, height and power. Therefore, CASA rules states that you must keep your drone at least 30m away from people.
If you don’t keep your distance, you run a high risk of injuring a member of the public and you risk facing sanctions for doing so.
For the same reasons, CASA rules state that you cannot fly your drone over sporting events, at music concerts or anywhere where people have gathered together in large numbers.
If you don’t abide by these rules, you are leaving yourself open to the issuing of a sizeable fine. More worryingly, if you injure someone with your drone you may even face a civil action. Keeping on the right side of these important rules will protect you, your drone and the people around you so it’s worth bearing them in mind when flying your quadcopter.
